Joel Hughes — UK and Europe Director at Indiegogo, and supporter of entrepreneurs. Previously, Joel has had over 10 years of experience spanning retail management, recruitment, marketing and business development.

What do you do at the moment?

I head up the UK and European markets at Indiegogo, a global crowdfunding platform for entrepreneurs who want to take their idea or product to market. Most of my time is spent working with entrepreneurs who have an upcoming product launch and helping them make the most of the opportunity that crowdfunding presents. The areas we cover aren’t limited just to crowdfunding but also include marketing, communications, shipping and fulfillment, and production.

What/who inspires you?

I feel really fortunate to be working alongside some incredibly inspiring people. Every day, I meet new entrepreneurs with big plans, and it’s a pleasure to be involved in their journey from the ‘light bulb moment’ to the time they potentially enjoying massive success. I also get the chance to see some of the emerging tech trends and new products before anyone else, and that itself is very inspiring.

Could you share your inspirational quote or motto?

Indiegogo’s founder, Danae Ringelmann, recently said: Expect self-doubt when you are building something new and important for the world. I really enjoy this quote as it resonates with everyone I speak to.

What would you suggest to those who just started or are dreaming about being an entrepreneur?

Don’t underestimate how much hard work goes into building something from scratch. Take as much advice and support as you can and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nobody has all the skills they need to be successful so it’s important to focus on your strengths and let others help you in areas you don’t think you can manage yourself. Also, it’s important to enjoy every moment. It’s an incredible learning opportunity and you’ll make some great friends along the way.
