One of the most interesting things about compiling these profiles for LWS over the years is seeing what inspires our writers. It’s often people, or nature, or beauty — but sometimes I’m surprised and delighted by a leftfield response. This week’s featured member gives one of those. Based in the Netherlands, just outside of Amsterdam (and in a place my other half once lived!), Daniel Loebl lists among his inspiration “silent, empty buildings and plazas”. That he’s also inspired by surrealist art and old movies might give you an insight into his mind, and his own creativity. Let’s jump on the tram to the end of the line and meet Daniel.

Daniel Loebl

  • Based in Amstelveen, The Netherlands
  • Writes fiction, flash fiction — and occasionally monologues for the theatre
  • Currently working on a new novel

Where and when do you write?

I write in my office in the mornings. I write in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep.

How do you write?

I use a computer so my hands can keep up with my brain.

Why do you write?

I love to create a self-contained world that makes sense, even if the people in it do not.

What inspires your creativity?

Silent, empty buildings and plazas. Surrealist art. Nature. Old movies. The people I meet.

Surrealist art provides inspiration for Daniel

What’s your favourite book?

Solaris, by Stanislav Lem.

What’s the best advice you’ve received about creativity?

Your first draft will never be the final version of the piece.

What’s the one thing you would tell other/aspiring writers?

Caminante, no hay camino. Se hace el camino al andar. (Walker, there is no path. The path is made by walking.)

How can we discover more about you and your work?

Daniel’s writing view overlooks a rather sunny green
