What is World of Warcraft?

World of Warcraft (WoW) hit the gaming scene in 2004, on the heels of Everquest and Asheron’s Call and Anarchy Online and outlived most of its early competition, eventually reaching a peak subscription rate of 12 million subscribers in 2010, holding the Guinness World Record for the world’s most subscribed to MMORPG. It is split into hundreds of servers in the EU, US and multiple other regions and two “sides” — Horde and Alliance.

It’s a game which has held people’s attention far longer than most, with its attention to plot, character development, content for everyone from solo players hunting achievements to raid encounters for 10–40 people.

Part of the structure of WoW are guilds, which are groups of people who stay together bound by community, common goals and a general desire for fun!

Who We Are

The Admiral Duncan is the WoW guild of the London Gaymers, based on the Draenor (EU) server playing on the Horde side. It was formed in 2016 and is one of the largest European LGBT+ guilds in the game.

We have members from all over the United Kingdom as well as from Western Europe. We want to ensure London Gaymers has inclusive IRL spaces as well as online communities to help foster relationships with people from outside London, with the WoW guild forming a key part of that.

No boss can withstand this many rainbows!

What We Do

As a part of London Gaymers it’s important that we continue to embody and support the values that LG uphold. To enable this we don’t have a requirement to join the guild as we see ourselves as a safe community and home for WoW players from all walks of life. As well as the online events and raids we run, we organise events for players to come together and enjoy their time in game. The majority of our events are “open” which means anyone who wants to come along, can come along, as the aim of the guild is to foster a safe place for people to enjoy a game that we all love!

Weekly Events

Most Wednesday evenings, we host an “Open Raid” for anyone who wants to come along who can meet the most minimum of item level requirements (915 at the time of writing), regardless of skill at the game, it’s open for anyone who wants to come along and have an evening enjoying the raids with other Gaymers

Other events we host and help with are:

Heroic Raid — Most Thursday Nights we host the Heroic Raid which are the more experienced raiders who are looking for a bigger challenge, taking on harder content.

PvP Evenings — We hold PvP Evenings as well with rated battlegrounds, and also arenas.

Mythic+ Dungeons — It’s a good place to find other people to do weekly dungeons and other dungeons

Timewalking — For items such as the Black Temple and Ulduar Raids we have arranged evenings to complete the raids and have a tonne of fun with the nostalgia of running those olde time raids.

We could do with practising our positioning when it comes to guild photos!

Competitions

We hold occasional competitions and events for in-game prizes — as we’re currently holding a multi-month competition to win 1.2 million in-game gold(!!)

Our current “Battle for Azeroth” competition consists of PvP matchup arena battles, Pet battles, Online quiz shows, Screenshot competitions, The Amazing Race, PvP team fights, A trip around Azeroth, all leading to a summer guild meetings, and a grand Legion finale! Phew!

Tavern Meetups

We hold real life meetups, allowing our guild members to meet and take part in quizzes, games, food, socialising to get to know each other outside of the computer screen.

At the last event, held in London on March 29th, approx. 30 guild members from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Norway, Sweden (and other locales) all came together for food, followed by a World of Warcraft pub quiz, with prizes supplied by Blizzard themselves. Thanks all those who joined us, especially those who travelled long distances to be there!

We aim to hold the next event some time at the start of August, with the aim of getting in one final pre-Battle For Azeroth look back at Legion and hype ourselves up for the next expansion.

Thoughts From a Guild Member

World of Warcraft has been a part of my life for almost 13 years now. Like any gaming community (or really just any community), people can be particularly harsh to any differences. Whilst most LGBT+ people don’t broadcast their differences, if it’s noticeable then gaming life can become difficult. Step in London Gaymers: Curtis, Adam, and John not only create a welcoming, warm environment for our little corner of Warcraft but also a fun, funny, and fantastic place to play with people in the same boat. The community is so important to me because I know I have friends to play with, old and new. London Gaymers Warcraft community is strong and exciting, and one I’m proud to have been adopted by.
