Narcissist Is The New Nazi
When I was in college, many decades ago, one of my roommates and I had a conversation driving back to school after a weekend away. Like most college kids we spent most of the five hour drive listening to music, but we did manage to exchange thoughts and ideas occasionally.
But one comment in particular stood out, and it was essentially this:
You can accuse anyone of being a narcissist.
Everyone has traits that can make them appear to be narcissistic, and if you ever really want to get even with someone, this is the way to do it. Just tell everyone they are a narcissist.
Now, I wouldn’t think too much of this advice from a twenty year old. However, the difference is that my former roommate’s father is a Psychologist.
And I did not find out until much later in life where pops worked, the CIA.
There is an interesting twist. I wonder how the CIA weaponized this as a product of the never-ending psychological operations factory.
People today are much more aware and knowledgeable about narcissists and narcissism then they were decades ago. Thanks to Dr. Ramani, and people like her, this personality trait is much more recognizable in our friends, family, coworkers, and perhaps to some degree, even ourselves. But this increase in awareness seems to come with a downside.
Now, everyone is a narcissist. This is the first thing you hear whenever someone decides to ‘smear campaign’ someone, they call them a narcissist. Just as my former roommate had related so long ago.
The ‘smear campaign’ is the narcissists first choice of assault weapon. Recruiting their flying monkeys, to gossip, slander, and discredit their target.
Before you know it, the narcissist’s target is ‘the devil him/herself’. People hate the narcissist just as much as their friend does and they don’t even know the person or anything about them. Forming opinions on gossip, slander, and hearsay.
So narcissists calling other narcissists, or even non-narcissists, narcissists. He’s a narcissist, she’s a narcissist, that guy he’s a narcissist. My guess is if you are reading this, you likely have been involved in a conversation like this in some capacity.
Old and busted: Calling someone a Nazi.
New hotness: Calling someone a Narcissist.
So the next time someone slaps the narcissist label on their next target, consider the source. Consider the motive. Evaluate the content and context.
Do you even know this ‘narcissist’?
Maybe don’t be so quick to hop on the gravy train.
