Suffering and Misery

Suffering is not the same as misery. Suffering is outward focused — it is a form of love, desiring the good of the other. Misery is turned inward, focusing on the deprivation of self. One can suffer without becoming miserable, and one can be miserable without truly suffering. Misery asks “why is this happening to me”, while suffering says “I am doing this for you”.
