Menstrual hygiene is an important subject to discuss, as it affects the lives of many women and girls. When you’re out in public and need to use the washroom, it’s essential to know what kind of facilities are available for you.

Menstrual hygiene is the practice of keeping yourself clean during your period. It includes things like changing your tampon or pad regularly, taking a shower or bath, and washing your hands after using the bathroom. It can be a challenge for anyone with a period but it’s especially difficult for girls who live in poverty because they may not have access to clean water or toilets at home, school, and work.

In a society where access to public washrooms is considered a basic right, it’s easy to forget that not everyone has this luxury. Menstrual hygiene is a crucial issue in India, where many women and girls face challenges due to cultural taboos, lack of access to hygiene products and sanitation facilities, and inadequate information about menstrual health. Lack of access also has serious health implications: not being able to manage your period properly can lead to infections such as bacterial vaginosis which may cause pelvic pain and discomfort; heavy bleeding which can lead to anemia if left untreated; Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) caused by staphylococcus bacteria entering through cuts or sores on the skin due to prolonged contact with menstrual blood.

Effective menstrual hygiene management requires a holistic approach, which involves addressing the physical, social, and cultural factors that impact menstrual hygiene. It is essential to prioritize menstrual hygiene management and to work towards creating a society where menstruation is no longer a taboo topic, and women and girls can manage their periods safely, hygienically, and with dignity.

“Break the silence, end the stigma. Let’s talk about menstrual hygiene.”
