Ever wondered what effects Sanitation plays in our lives? Sanitation has been a major issue in India for a long time. According to a report by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in 2019, approximately 44% of the population in India still practices open defecation. This has significant implications for public health, as open defecation can lead to the spread of diseases and infections.

Poor Sanitation Practices

To address the issue, the Indian government launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) in 2014, with the goal of achieving universal sanitation coverage by October 2019. The campaign aimed to build millions of toilets across the country, and promote behavioral change to encourage people to use them.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has made significant progress in improving sanitation in India. According to the government’s data, the country is now 100% open defecation-free, and over 100 million toilets have been built since the campaign began. There still needs work to be done to ensure that all Indians have access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities.

EFFECTS OF POOR SANITATION

1. Health problems: Poor sanitation is a major cause of many diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. These diseases can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and even death.

2. Social stigmatization: Lack of access to proper sanitation facilities can lead to social stigmatization, particularly for women and girls who may face challenges related to menstruation and hygiene.

To eradicate this social stigmatization, Loocafé Pink is providing a free unisex public washroom for only women. It ensures to provide women with safe and hygienic toilets. It includes baby feeding rooms and sanitary napkin vending machines. These washrooms are run and maintained by women.

Poor sanitation also has significant negative impacts on the environment and economy. Addressing these issues requires investment in sanitation infrastructure, education on proper sanitation practices, and strong policies to ensure that sanitation is accessible to all.
