Saga — Why We invested

When it comes to money, nothing trumps trust. As Yuval Harari puts it, trust is the raw material with which money is minted. In 2017, we watched as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital currencies took the global stage, promising to usher in a new era of decentralized finance and leave the antiquated financial system in the dust. Yet despite the financial mania and mainstream awareness, no cryptocurrency has yet managed to bootstrap the trust necessary to gain adoption as new money. We set out to understand — are decentralized currencies fundamentally flawed or are fiat currencies just that good? Turns out they both have limitations.

On the one hand, decentralized currencies are subject to wild price swings, significantly limiting their potential as an alternative medium of exchange. Moreover, their anonymity & pseudonymity are simply incompatible with the banking system. On the other hand, fiat currencies are subject to the political whims of nation-states and leadership turnover. Monetary policies are moving targets, money can be arbitrarily printed without warning, effectively diluting existing fiat holders. But what about a hybrid — a new form of money that overcomes volatility, ensures accountability, complements existing currencies, and is algorithmically created and destroyed, rather than politically?

Enter Saga, lool’s latest investment. Rather than sidestepping banks and regulators, Saga designed a currency that enhances the existing financial system and takes a thoughtful approach to earning trust. Initially, each Saga is simply a 1:1 digital representation of highly trusted currencies — Saga holders bear the same risk as holding a mixture of dollars, euros, pounds, yen, and yuan (a.k.a. the SDR, the de facto global reserve currency). By pegging Saga to a basket of well-known currencies when trust is low, Saga incentivizes early adoption from investors looking for a stable & usable digital currency.

As more people buy, use, and sell Saga, this 1:1 ratio decreases to reflect increasing trust. As Saga gains adoption, gradually and continuously, Saga’s will decouple from fiat currency altogether, and stand on its own as a non-sovereign digital currency. In parallel, Sagas will be algorithmically issued or liquidated from a smart contract to keep volatility within a predefined range; a technique used by many fiat currencies through history.

Now this might all sound a bit complex, and that’s because it is. To build this model correctly and execute a successful go-to-market requires unprecedented cooperation from world economic leaders, banks, investors, exchanges, businesses, and the public at large. To tackle this global challenge, Saga recruited some of the most well-known experts in the world, including Jacob Frenkel, the former Governor of the Bank of Israel and current chairman of JPMorgan Chase International; economics Nobel laureate Myron Scholes, known for creating the Black-Scholes formula, the most well-known model for pricing options and derivatives; Dan Galai, a co-developer of VIX, the leading measure of financial market volatility; and Leo Melamed, the chairman emeritus of CME Group and pioneer in financial futures. The collective knowledge of these advisors brings a level of insight, experience, and professionalism from which Saga has designed its economic system. To learn more about the mechanisms powering the Saga economy, we encourage you to read the Saga Whitepaper.

Leading the execution is Saga’s CEO Ido Sadeh Man, a jazz musician turned political scientist turned product manager turned venture capitalist who comes from a special operations unit in the Israeli military. Alongside Ido sits a 25 person team comprised of entrepreneurs, technology experts, researchers, historians, economists and financial professionals.

Having reviewed more than 50 investment opportunities related to blockchain technology, Saga stood out with its unparalleled level of sophistication, depth, and ambition that both impressed and inspired us to think about how money should evolve in the age of the internet.

We are excited to invest alongside Mangrove Capital Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Singulariteam Technology Group and a number of other valuable investors to support the Saga team in its quest to become the first digital currency to truly gain mainstream adoption.
