A Little Magic

Inventing deadly traffic in his small mind

After dropping seeds, I savor the moment;
that one after you fill the bird feeder,

and wait with a tense shudder
for a little magic to appear. He returned

today, a glowing apple of meat,
flicking seeds with a larvae tongue,

cocked and twitchy, inventing deadly traffic
in his small mind, carrying secrets

in a bubbly silent laugh of falling husks.
The birdseed said it would attract him,

mixing gray sun with a motley brown fodder.
After eating a fill of winter gold, he arced away,

more calls to make, more breath to catch,
pleased to charm with pip and hackled plume.
