An Island on Clear Waters

I wish to be an island
on clear waters
of serenity blue —
where the weight
of the world
isn’t so heavy,
and I can feel
the cool summer breeze
passing through.

I wish to be swept away
to an idyllic island
of childhood dreams,
to be like a little sparrow
flying with ease
without harsh resistance
from the wind.

But I am not an island
and the waters
are never clear.

That island I dream of
will never exist again —
and I fear for the little sparrow
that may be tossed about
by these troubled winds,
pushed farther away
from its everlasting home.

An island on clear waters
may just be another
lingering dream,
but as time marches on,
I know it’s what I’ll never be.
