Calamity

A Poem

It’s all around me,
disastrous events
marked by great loss
and lasting distress
and suffering
as an everyday,
regular thing
because this is the way
the world is now
and I’m left to wonder
how sane I am
for being so
unaffected

I see the calamity
and I remain calm
because I understand
what I can control,
almost nothing,
and I wish nothing
to be hard, but I also
know it’s not on me
to fix the fires
that others make
in their front yards
from their own
discarded kindling

Maybe it’s better
for me to be like this,
so absent from it,
the calamity,
because my orbit
spins at the
perfect speed
and my world
is just the way
I want it to be
