In Perpetuity

A Poem

I never knew that loss
would be felt in perpetuity
I mean, it makes sense
because grief is a grizzly bear
but I didn’t understand
just how gnarly its teeth
would be every day, forever

My memories live in perpetuity
and it certainly helps that I have
a photographic memory
but that’s not as good as you think
because you remember everything
e v e r y t h i n g
that ever happened, in perpetuity

Sometimes, I like the thought of it
an endless sky, a road to nowhere,
a mountain too high, a pit too low
Consider it an abyss of sorts,
or maybe something heavenly
but it’s just an open road
in perpetuity
