Pain Is Not A Competition
A poem
Sometimes, to make others aware,
and in an attempt to put things in perspective,
we minimize the pain
that someone else is choosing to share with us,
forgetting that pain is not a competition.
Pain is not something that needs comparison
not something to boast,
not something that is a competition.
There is nothing to be gained out of making
pain a competition,
no prize for the greatest suffering,
no trophy for the one who holds the most hurt.
But there is much to be gained by listening to
the words of others
when they choose to share their hurt,
there is much to be gained by trying to help
health the wounds of others,
when you see them open and raw.
When we listen and when we help,
we’re making others feel seen,
and heard,
and loved.
When we listen and when we help,
we’re tipping the scales of sadness,
and infusing pleasure into the…
