Simpleton

A Poem

Life would be easier if I were just a simpleton
A person lacking common sense and often
times deficient in judgment, a fool
But those definitions aren’t proper to me
because my thought of a simpleton
is one who is unburdened by modernity
Free from the constraints of technology
and the nagging noise of notifications

So, life would be easier if I was a simpleton
because my brain would be less distracted
by all of the noise marketing out there
struggling for my attention against
all of the other things that actually matter
as if a reminder to drink a glass of water
is as essential as work deadline,
but come to think of it, the water
probably matters more because
that is a proactive self-care alert

Maybe a simpleton is a person
who doesn’t need the bells and whistles,
the birthday celebration with a cake,
the constant thank you and sorry,
Maybe the simpleton wants life
to be the simplest version of itself,
one unencumbered by trending ephemera
and a scaling…
