Starlight

A Poem

I almost gave up
the week before I met you
love had proven to be
simply too elusive
too well matched
with a year
filled with change
and fueled by chaos

I was there that weekend
in the city of my youth
at my sister’s house
in a room
with a ceiling
littered with stars
illuminating the darkness for her
for Eleanor
the girl with a heart of gold
the girl who made me
want to come home

that night
in that room filled with stars
I lay there and wondered
if I would ever break the cycle
of giving love
but never
receiving any
in return

and then I met you

when we met
you wore stars
twin to the ones
from that weekend
the weekend before I met you
and I wondered if maybe
you would light up my darkness
and illuminate my world…
