The Tornado of My Mind

A Poem

Can’t concentrate on
the task at hand, on things that
must be done, I find
my mind, wandering in all
sorts of directions
— never
in the direction
I need it to go —
that I want it to go.

Insecurity
is fueling my
inability
to be confident,
and proud
of achievements I’d
only dreamed about before.

Inner critic says,
you aren’t good enough
you aren’t anything special,

what makes you think, you
have the right?

I silence her
with one question —
Why not me?

Deep down it feels
like it could be — should be
the beginning
to a whole
new chapter.

I won’t ask you
to catch me because
I am the supporter —
I hold you up
I speak life into you.

I could never ask you
to do the same.
I’d never want to be
a bother — Am I insane?
Can’t organize all this
clutter,
floating around in the
recesses of my brain.

My mind feels
like a tornado,
sirens blaring,
warning, but I
choose to stand
out in the open

without shelter.

Whirling and swirling
twisting and turning
sweep me up and take
me away, far away

where I can make
sense of it all.
Anywhere but here.

Sitting in silence.
To capture my attention,
use intention to get where
I’m trying to go.
