Turning Up at the Edge
We sit down to dinner this day
There is a flashing sign above
my brain that reads vacancy
in neon green, a hanging banner
that proclaims open for business.
Someone has set the silverware
with a ruler, napkins in a knotted fold.
We sit down to dinner this day,
holding hands to pray just long enough.
Later, we will sing as dishes wash
and gather round to watch the laughs
until sun breaks over a horizon hill.
The jigsaw puzzle shall proclaim
there are no pieces missing,
plenty of curves and straight edges
to keep us mystified and seeking.
On this day, we will drink deep on soul,
refill our glass pitchers, raise them
sharp, cast a look, and depend upon it.
