Our youngest Youth Coders (Python) student coding away!

From the adjacent room, sounds of soft giggling and light typing on the keyboard could be heard. The giggles that danced through the air came from Andrew, a primary 3 pupil eagerly awaiting for his next coding class in Python programming to start. The 9-year-old has been attending coding classes with Loshberry Code Studio for a year now. As he busied himself in the classroom, we sat down with Andrew’s mum, Rose, a pleasant poised lady, for a quick chat.

Q: How did you first hear of Loshberry Code Studio?

A: It was from the KiasuParents Forum. I read the forum quite regularly. I read about the (Loshberry Code Studio) coding class there.

Q: Why did you choose Loshberry Code Studio?

A: I read through Loshberry’s profile and the website impressed me. I also think that it’s suitable for his age.

Q: Have you tried enrolling Andrew into other coding schools before?

A: He did attend some coding programme. It’s actually not a coding school, but an enrichment Centre. They had some programmes over the school holidays where they invited someone to teach them. It’s not Lego Mindstorms but some sort of Lego programme. There was some simple coding but he found it too simple. But he is very interested so that’s why I thought he would want to learn more. I think it was where he first found his interest in coding.

Q: What are the differences between the other workshops and Loshberry Code Studio?

A: He found the other programmes (outside Loshberry) a bit boring. The teacher was nice but he couldn’t engage the students well. Whereas for Hwee Shan, she can really capture the students’ attention and she is able to convey her lessons in a very lively way. So he (Andrew) really enjoys it. And she can put it at a level where they can understand even though they are still so young.

Q: Do you notice any difference in Andrew after attending coding classes?

A: After every class, Andrew walks home with increased self-confidence and his face lights up when he recalls passionately about accomplishing new challenges in class. As a parent, I feel very happy when I see my child so enthusiastic and passionate about something. So I want to encourage the passion and the self-confidence. His face lights up!

Enthusiastically coding away even after the lesson, during dinner time!

Q: Andrew attends coding classes with his sister, Grace, do you think the siblings have bonded more?

A: Yes, Yes. My daughter was actually very excited that she can finally attend a class (Python programming) with Andrew because my daughter is much older than him so there aren’t many classes that they can attend together. She was so thrilled that she could attend this class with him.

Q: So does Grace enjoy coding as well?

A: She loves it. She would love to continue but she is currently very very busy with school. She loves to learn new things and she likes coding very much.

Q: What do you think coding inculcates into children that pick it up?

A: I think it trains them in their logical thinking. I was just asking Grace, she says that you must be able to see the bigger picture in a logical way before you are able to code the programme out.
