#IoTWeek

#IoTWeek kicks off today at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre. The week was developed to help London boroughs consider how they might use smart street infrastructure for the benefit of all Londoners. You can find out more about the week’s plan and purpose in our earlier article.

We’ll be live-streaming the three panel discussions (Part 1 and Part 2 of the recording are now available to rewatch online) and live-tweeting the day. If you would like to join the conversation, please follow @LOTI_LDN and @CitiesSharing as well the hashtag #IoTWeek on Twitter.

We spent last week finalising the full agenda for the day, which is now available to read online.

We also created a shared team space online for the week to host conversations, as well as share documents and useful links with one another. Please feel free to register to join the team, using the link above.

Sharing data to improve Special Educational Needs (SEN) services

We have been working closely with Caroline Dawes, Head of Children’s Services at London Councils, about a potential LOTI data collaboration project with Special Educational Needs (SEN) transport service officers.

The idea behind this project is to explore the potential to share data on SEN bus routes across LOTI member boroughs. The view is that this may have the potential to reduce travel times for the children who use this service, as well as contributing to boroughs’ greener agendas by reducing air pollution and costs. This is a sensitive agenda, and we will be working closely with the experts, prior to scoping, designing and implementing the project.

Last week, we met with the SEN transport leads from Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Bromley, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Newham, Southwark, Sutton, and Westminster (indicated in yellow in the map below) to test out our hypothesis using the four-step framework for data collaboration projects set out in week 30.

Boroughs involved in LOTI’s SEN Transport working group

The workshop was chaired by Glenn Garcia, Assistant Director of Education, Access and Statutory Services, London Borough of Southwark, and our objectives were to:

  • Identify reasons why boroughs may currently share SEN bus routes
  • Understand what data would be required to enable boroughs to effectively share SEN bus routes
  • Agree on who would need to be involved in order for us to conduct a pilot.

After a series of exercises shaped around our four-step framework, we agreed to share the full report on SEN transport undertaken by London Councils. This is due to be published in Spring 2020. We will work with SEN Transport leads to plan and set up a more detailed discovery and small-scale pilots in at least two different geographical areas, made up of at least three boroughs. We’ll also try to engage with the Director of Education and Social Care networks so that we can ensure that our project fits in with the wider agenda for this service. The full summary of the workshop is available to read here.

This Week

As well as #IoTWeek, we’ll be:

  1. Holding our latest meeting with our Advisory Panel to discuss LOTI’s Year 2 strategy.
  2. Meeting with Barnet’s Digital team to discuss LOTI’s progress to date and scope for future collaboration.
  3. Planning for our first-ever Digital Apprentices’ Link-Up next week.
