I Lied I’m Still Talking About This Stupid Fucking Slap

I didn’t watch the whole Oscars episode last night. Instead, I turned it on and went to take a nap after smoking a big fat joint. When I woke up things were happening and Chris Rock was just coming on stage. I got excited because you know, I like Chris Rock — except when he makes stupid jokes, which has been happening a lot lately — so here I am expecting to get a few laughs, and have a moment with the world, when “it” happens.

You bet your ass I hit rewind and watched that shit twice. And then I watched every gif, meme, and video I could get my hands on, and I am still shocked, not because Will Smith smacked Chris Rock, but because WILL SMITH, Smacked Chris ROCK!

WHAT?

Yeah, I know what the white people in the room are thinking “ooh the violence,” “ooh that’s so not classy,” “oh well he’s gotta lose his award now.”

Start with the pedophiles, rapists, and racists first.

Roman Polanski still has his Oscar, as does Quintin Terrintino —you’ve heard the rumors, don’t even lie.

More than half the women in that room are active parts of the #MeToo movement and yet of all the people in that room Chris Rock went after not one, but two women, and one with a disability.

The only reason that Will Smith got away with what he did (so far) is because of what Hal H. Harris so eloquently wrote in his peace — it’s part of our culture.

You don’t have to like the fact that Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, but white people, it’s really not about you.

I resent as a woman of color who has lived with domestic abuse her entire life, seeing white women talking about how Will Smith “Triggered” them and sent them reeling back to the days when they were being abused. What the fuck did Will do that was abusive to Jada? Not a God damned thing.

His slapping Chris Rock is not the same as what domestic abusers do, it’s in fact the exact opposite.

He was standing up for her, he was showing the entire world that his wife — his talented, powerful, beautiful, stunningly humble BLACK WIFE — is no longer a punchline to make white people happy and THAT is why you’re angry at him.

This woman is his partner in life, in business, in family, in every single way these two have proven to the world that they love each other and that they stand for each other.

Will and Jada Smith have been jokes for the entire time they’ve been together. From constant reminders of Jada’s friendship with 2Pac to her weight, her hair, their parenting skills, their relationship. Not one thing about their lives has remained private, and when they finally decided to lean into that lack of privacy and protection…what happened?

Y’all turned them into clowns for your amusement.

The moment that they decided to show the world that they weren’t perfect and that Will is in fact a human being with very strong emotions when it comes to seeing his wife in pain, y’all jump on him like vultures. Fuck off.

Legit.

Fuck Off.

Did Will Smith make a mistake?

I do not fucking think so.

I as a Black girl and woman have been bullied, abused, violated, and touched in every horrible way a person can be against my will and I’ve only ever had 2 men stand up for me once. Neither is a part of my life anymore because I broke the rule.

You see Black women and girls are supposed to be strong all the time, we’re supposed to enjoy being the butt of the joke, we’re supposed to allow people to criticize everything about us and we’re not allowed to say anything about it. Because the moment we do we’re “rats” “snitches” “bitches” “liars” “crazy” or the absolute fucking worst “angry.”

Will and Jada have admitted in the past to growing pains and to finding it difficult to navigate having a blended family, they’ve navigated racism, misogyny, mysognoir, and every other “ism” you can imagine, and the one moment Will says “enough is enough” it’s too far. For You.

“It Should Have Been Handled Privately,”

Chris Rock insulted Jada Pinkett Smith in public, repeatedly, and he did it because he knew he’d get a laugh at the expense of not one but two Black women.

He legit made a joke about how a woman would be pissed off if her husband won and she didn’t as if we can’t be proud of our partners separate and above how we feel about our own successes. Chris Rock is CONSTANTLY going after women and disabled folk and honestly? I laughed.

I’m still laughing because you know what? Sometimes jokes kill, that’s just a fact. In a room filled with the wealthiest and most powerful people in Hollywood history, Chris Rock made jokes at the expense of Black women because it was easy for him to do.

That’s not comedy it’s lazy, comedy is supposed to challenge, inspire, judge, question, it’s not supposed to make you hurt and every time Chris Rock tells a joke at someone’s expense it hurts. Maybe comedians should think about the kinds of jokes they tell.

Ellen tells jokes, she’s one of the most successful comedians on the planet, and you don’t see her punching down. It’s absolutely possible to be funny without being a jackass, and the sooner people like Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle learn that the better.

Sending all my love,
