Movies for a Quarantined Netflix Party!
“You don’t have to be naked to be sexy.”
― Nicole Kidman
Being stuck at home for a long period of time can be isolating. You’re used to going to the movies with friends, but we can’t do that right now. Well, there’s a Google Chrome extension that lets you have a digital ‘watch party’ with friends!
The extension synchronizes video playback and even incorporates a group chat for everyone in your party. These three movies are meant for you to have some fun and to give you a break from all the things going on out there in this crazy world. That’s why this week for the Film-List we’re giving you the perfect movies for a Netflix Party!
Hook (1991)
Let’s start this party with an all-time favorite. Hook follows an adult Peter Pan who must go back to Neverland in order to rescue his children from Captain Hook. This film is filled with an all-star cast that includes Robin Williams as ‘Peter Banning’, Dustin Hoffman as ‘Captain Hook’; Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, and of course we can’t forget Dante Basco as Rufio! No lie, when I was a kid I thought Rufio was the coolest person ever… I still do.
Oh and I didn’t realize this until now, but this amazing film was directed by Steven Spielberg. Like, what the hell? If you’re a kid of the 90’s you probably haven’t seen this film in years. It’ll give you and your friends a trip down memory lane. So, order your food. Grab your alcohol. Pop your corn. Then, just like Peter and the Lost Boys, all you have to do is sit on your couch, sync-up with your friends, and then use your imagination. Just a couple friend hanging on the couch and watching movies!
You can catch this movie on Netflix.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
If you somehow missed this gem of a rom-com, then now is the perfect time to catch it! Always Be My Maybe stars the dynamic duo of Ali Wong and Randall Park as ‘Sasha Tran’ and ‘Marcus Kim’. Reunited after 15 years, now-famous-chef Sasha and hometown musician Marcus, begin to feel the old sparks of attraction; but struggle to adapt to each other’s worlds.
This movie has so much heart and two great comedic actors. Plus, it’s got a bomb ass soundtrack. Like — Randall Park has bars y’all! Did you hear that? It was some sirens; they must have found Randall Park’s mixtape… You can blame Cody Ko for that joke.
Ali Wong’s presence is what really provides balance in this film. The comedy, the romance, and those real-ass moments. She kills them all and sets the tone for the entire film. Do you know how amazing it is for a rom-com to have a female lead? This film is a breath of fresh air and well worth your time. Oh, but don’t listen to the soundtrack until after you watch the film. It does contain spoilers, but also BANGERS!
Of course, you can catch this Netflix Original — on Netflix!
About Time (2013)
I’d be doing you and myself a disservice if I didn’t recommend this for the Film-List. About Time is the story of ‘Tim’, who learns he can time travel; who does everything he can to better his life for himself and the woman he loves. If you know me — even a tad bit — then you know I adore Rachel McAdams. She’s America’s Sweetheart and there’s nothing you can say that’d make me change my mind. Then you’ve got Domhnall Gleeson, who starred in one of my favorite films of the last five years; Ex-Machina. These two have so much chemistry; it’s adorable as shit. Figuratively speaking.
One of my favorite elements of the movie is how it shines as a true Science Fiction film, and how the aspect of time travel is used as a tool to enhance the romance within the film. Very few films blend genres the way About Time does.
I believe it’s worth your time. It’s worth your laughs. And it’s most definitely worth your tears. See it with family; see it with friends (Seriously, I think I’ve seen this movie six times in the last three years and I’m going to watching it again this weekend).
Get a little romantic with your sci-fi and catch this film on Netflix!
There you have it: three movies perfect to watch with your friends from a distance. Honestly, I find it really incredible that we are finding new ways to enjoy films with one another. I miss going to the theaters and having that experience with my friends, but this truly feels like a great way to cope with it.
