Movies For The End of The World
A global pandemic. Empty city streets. Hours and hours of media to watch. The end of the world doesn’t have to be all bad! I know the world isn’t ending, but this week’s Film-List includes some of my favorite apocalypse movies. Now, I’m not throwing films like The Road or Contagion on here. The Road is one of my favorite films of all time, but I don’t want to be emotionally wrecked for the rest of the year. We’re going to look at films this week that have a light-hearted take on the end of the world. Because hey, if you can’t have fun with the end of the world — then you’re just a pessimist.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
2012 was a big year for world-ending movies; due to the whole Mayan calendar situation. One movie during that time I feel missed out on a lot of love is Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
Starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, an asteroid on an impact with Earth, a man’s wife leave in a panic. He decides to go cross country in hopes to reunite with his high school sweetheart. His neighbor joins him for the last road trip ever. Very few movies are able to bring hope during trying times, but this film allows a sense of levity to the moment.
The idea that it’s better late than never rings through the entire film. If you want a feel good romance that ends with the apocalypse then this movie is for you!
You can watch this on Hulu
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
I think it’s safe to say that Shaun of the Day has become a zombie classic. With the all star team of Edgar Wright, as director and writer, Simon Pegg, as our hero and writer, and Nick Frost, the best person to go through a zombie apocalypse with, the entire film is crafted to perfection within the Horror Comedy genre.
A man’s uneventful life is disrupted by the zombie apocalypse. That’s what IMDb had for the plot. It’s that simple and that’s all that you need to know before enjoying this film. Very few films are able to resonate that comedic line when dealing with horror elements, the team here sticks the landing!
Plus, anytime Edgar Wright is involved with a film you know there will be an epic music sequence. You get that and a great time!
You can watch this on Hulu
Zombieland (2009)
If you like to daydream and argue with your friends on who’d survive the zombie apocalypse, but deep down you know you’d all die, then Zombieland is the end of the world movie for you.
Zombieland has one of the most talented cast ever put together for a horror comedy, in my opinion. I mean we got Woody Harrelson who is just a legend, Jessie Eisenberg right before he starred in The Social Network, Emma Stone right after Superbad and right before Easy A, and Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine. Oh and the best Bill Murray cameo ever. So you know, this was pretty fucking awesome when it came out and it still holds up today.
And if you’re really up to it you can do a double feature with Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap.
You can watch this on Hulu
So there’s your three world ending films that’ll make you laugh this weekend while you’re stuck at home contemplating on when the next asteroid sized disaster will hit. If you are quarantining on your own hit us up and we’ll watch them with you. So go seek a movie for the end of the world!
