TV Shows That Deserve a Movie
Six Seasons and a Movie
I’ve been rewatching Community on Netflix since it dropped during this quarantine. First off, I forgot how amazing this show was. Go give it a rewatch! Second of all, one of my favorite on going jokes through the show is when Abed talks about Cougar Town — and yes I love that show as well. Penny Can! — he always says, “Six seasons and a movie.”
I mean that used to be a thing. A show would get super popular and then eventually it’d land a movie. Were all these shows great? Yes. Were all the movies based off these shows great? Hell no! The three that comes straight to mind are The Simpsons Movie (honestly it’s just three episodes put together dont @ me), Sex and the City 2 is a movie I guess, and Entourage is like the worst episode of the season. If you love these movies I love you, but I’m not a fan of them.
The closest thing we’ve gotten to this in recent years is with Breaking Bad and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. In full transparency, I must state that I was not a fan of Breaking Bad and never finished the series. Which has led to me not watching the film. I just wanted that out in the open; as a movie and television enthusiast, and to say just because something is good doesn’t mean it’s for you. Plus, I watched Weeds and didn’t want another drug drama… Breaking Bad is better I admit.
Any who! This got me thinking. What shows deserve the six seasons and a movie treatment that never got it. Many of our shows today have budgets damn near that of a movie budget for a season, but imagine your favorite shows with a full film budget for a two hour experience you can enjoy.
Now, I won’t put Game of Thrones on this list for two reasons: First reason is because they were very close to doing prequel movies, but fell through. So an attempt was made. Second reason is I don’t want to hear people complain about season eight again. It’s over. Get over it.
So here’s my top three series that deserve their own movie!
Community (2009)
I know this is an obvious answer because it inspired this post. It even hit 6 seasons after being cancelled and brought back for it’s final season on Yahoo. Remeber when Yahoo tried to have original content? Yeah, me neither. That’s why we need a movie for Community.
The shows relishes within internet and meta culture. There are entire episodes that are built around classic pop culture movies and character archetypes that Abed references throughout the entire series. So you might ask how does this 20 minute episode sitcom have credence as a full feature film?
Abed, as the inspiring film maker, decides to come back and shoot a documentary of his old Community College Greendale for the closing of the school. The entire study group comes back one last time to say goodbye, but there’s a murder… The dean is dead! It’s up to the study group to solve this mystery and finally close the doors at Greendale. Throw in a bit of movie motifs and references then you got it!
I know a Community movie has been in the talks since the cancelation and having someone with the success of Dan Harmon, creator of Community and co-creator of Rick and Morty, there will always be a chance. Hopefully with Netflix having the rights to stream the show, they could potentially work with Harmon to create a Netflix Original movie. I mean they made a movie of Between Two Ferns so anything is possible.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
Technically, Avatar does not have 6 seasons, but this is my list so I’m going to break the rules because I really want an animated Avatar: The Last Airbender movie where Aang is adult Avatar, but if we count The Legend of Korra then we’d get that 6 season rule so boom! There — fixed it!
We’ve gotten a Avatar movie before, but we don’t like to talk about it and it was only a retelling of book one of the series. Netflix is also working on their live adaptation of the series. This would be a perfect time to drop an animated film based off the hit series to help bring people back to the world before the new take on the show premieres. Especially since Netflix and Nickelodeon have a deal for Nickelodeon to make original content for the streaming platform.
I mean I can’t find one person who didn’t like the show and find me one person who wouldn’t want an animated film. Seriously, if you know anyone who wouldn’t — let me know. I’m going to send them a strongly worded email detailing the distain I have for them and then tell them I’ll love them because that’s what we’re about here. As long as they changed their mind…
Doctor Who (2005)
I know my fellow Whovians might say there have already been some Doctor Who movies. I love the Christmas specials that’ve played in theaters as much as the other, but there hasn’t never been a true Doctor Who movie with a real budget.
I love the authentic feel that the series has kept through this new era of the show. I mean we still get Daleks. Doctor Who is one of the original scifi shows that many of our British friends had grown up with. I personally didn’t find it until my college years because some might say I was a hipster… looking back it I must confirm I was in fact a hipster.
Now many old sci-fi shows are getting the film treatment or a complete high production revisit for modern streaming services. Imagine a film franchise based off Doctor Who like Star Trek did. I’m not saying go the Abrams method and turn it into an action series.
You can keep the comedy and timey whimey of it all, but build a bigger idea that can only be done through a film. I mean if Downton Abbey can get a feature film I think it’s safe to say Doctor Who deserves one as well. Plus, Jodie Whittaker has been a gem in the role. I’d love to see her be the lead for the first film, with a bit of some more of the timey whimey scenes where she can interact with David Tennat, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi because damn those four would kill it in a scene together. Then we build an entire alternate timeline for the film series that can live on it’s own because time travel.
Well there you have it folks. That’s my three films I think deserve their 6 seasons and a movie. What shows you think should get their own movie? Let us know in the comments!
