What’s Society Like In 2074?

In the 50 years from 2024 to 2074, the world undergoes many drastic changes. In the current decade, the world suffers from a lack of resources and global conflict, although there are technological advances and innovation every day. By 2034, the world relies very heavily on AI and neural interfaces to solve issues, while ignoring the extreme climate change that continues to intensify. The oceans rise continually until many countries begin to drown.

In 2040, there will be global tsunamis that completely engulf many cities in water and chaos. The world mourns many countries, some Hawaii and most of coastal China, as they are among the first to disappear, though a new island, later named Shanglulu emerges in between these territories, paying homage to Shanghai and Honolulu, where mass migration and diversity merges. Although nations had been fighting each other for many years, the desolation encouraged great cooperation and scientific discoveries. One of which is the unearthing of a new species of kelp that, upon worldwide research, is found to have both regenerative and shapeshifting properties. The main deposit of this new kelp will be found in Shanglulu, thus it will have a huge economical rise.

The next 10 years brings great leaps in technology with AI development, which now has taken over most non-creative and dangerous jobs, like city construction, but at the same time has been incorporated as a tool for every job. In this time, the kelp will be thoroughly investigated and experimented with, discovering its amazing properties, and later implementing them into various technological creations.

By the 2060’s, Shanglulu becomes one of the world’s biggest and most influential cities. In this pancultural epicenter, scientists develop two products, called Drip and Drop. Drip is a fabric, used mostly for clothing, that utilizes the deep sea kelp to morph and change according to the user’s necessities. Combined with Drop, a device that connects to a user’s brain to read waves and interact with the modern world, citizens of Shanglulu save money on clothing and no longer on all of the resources needed for cell phones/laptops. People now see articles and almost all media through holograms projected from the Drop.

Although DripDrop was once reserved for more affluent members of society, the bountifulness of the kelp has almost entirely erased social gaps and brought great success to everyone in Shanglulu, allowing everyone access to the two interlinked products.

In 2066, a fashion designer named Keanu Tao establishes a fashion and lifestyle magazine Current, which is naturally inclined into sustainability, and aspires for more eco-friendly lifestyles around the rest of the world. Tao is also completely aware of the importance of ethics, care, and belonging in the AI and Machine world. The magazine seeks to find a healthy balance between humanity, nature and technology, promoting mental health and inclusivity.

In the following 8 years, DripDrop evolves as well as Current. They adapt to the new discoveries made and sometimes collaborate to improve the products, in order to make them more accessible, eco-friendly, inclusive and fashionable.

In the year 2074, Current, the lead magazine for ecological and technological fashion, seeks to broaden its market, enhance its inclusiveness day by day and help the people to experience fashion as an emotional support and liberating tool rather than an impossible beauty standard.

Our Newscast: “Creating a World From Scratch”

To showcase the creation process of our magazine, we have produced a visual newscast that illustrates the thinking that went behind it.

This is a newscast going live in 2074.

Belonging and Care

Current is a magazine founded on inclusivity. Not only does it completely rely on sustainable fashion and technology that utilizes abundant, renewable resources, but it also promotes and raises up fresh voices in the fashion industry. Our magazine constantly evaluates whether it can be doing more to highlight fashion and lifestyle choices that make every citizen of Shanglulu feel respected, heard, and beautiful in their skin. We will constantly make an effort to develop clothing styles that pay homage to the complexity of heritage and culture in a changing world. We also understand that people have different abilities, both physical and mental, and Current will always make an effort to show DripDrop designers that utilize different materials and sizes to make every wearer feel loved.

The Current Technological Landscape

Our world is rapidly evolving from a physical reality to a hybrid space where digital and physical elements intertwine. This convergence, known as XR, encompasses both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).

The Future of Technology

Imagine a world where fashion shows are held in virtual spaces, and clothing can be tried on as holographic projections. This is the potential of hologram technology. Beyond fashion, holograms could transform our homes into dynamic environments with projected art, furniture, and entertainment. The implications for retail, education, and social interaction are vast. As technology continues to advance, holograms may become as ubiquitous as smartphones, fundamentally altering our lives.
