The Salzburg Global Media Academy’s in-person program showcased in 2024 a first-of-its-kind initiative of “Spotlight Sessions,” offering students and scholars a rich, parallel programming experience. These sessions were designed around pivotal themes of care, imagination, belonging, and agency- in the age of machines- each essential to contemporary media literacy and transmedia storytelling. This approach not only enhanced their creative capabilities but also prepared them to navigate and shape the evolving media landscape effectively.

Focusing on belonging and agency, the Spotlight Sessions aimed to deepen students’ understanding of media pedagogy. By integrating these themes, the Spotlight Sessions provided a dynamic, interactive learning environment where students honed their skills, shared insights, and built meaningful connections.

Below is the list of Spotlights Sessions that ran as parallel programs across 3 weeks:

Day #1 Spotlight Sessions- Journalism & News Media.

  • Writing with Voice- Len Apcar
  • Planning for the Unexpected: Newsroom in Action- Manny Chavez
  • Exiled Journalists: Finding their voice in new homes- Hanan Badr
