This is a true story. I changed the teacher’s name and the town name since this crime happened 34 years ago, and it appears he’s still working in education.

Grandma — in our family we called her Nonnie — was widowed at age 54 in 1964. She believed that the marriage vows she made to her beloved George, my grandfather, were for life. So she never dated as a widow. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t still interested in sex, it turns out. At very least, watching it.

Let me set the scene. Rural Quebec mid-1980s. Nonnie lives on a quiet street with big trees and big, old houses. Mr. Stanner, my Grade 10 Ethics teacher, lives right beside Nonnie, on the second floor of a triplex. He’s renting since his marriage of over 20 years has recently ended. And, like many rentals, the suite did not come with curtains. And Mr. Stanner, being 47-years-old, either didn’t know how to or didn’t care to shop for window coverings.

And frankly, I don’t blame him.

There was no view into his apartment from the street since the front of the triplex had a big porch on the second floor. The back of the building faced woods and a steep cliff. And one of his walls was windowless, shared with his second-storey neighbour’s…
