From sex-crazed dating to a sexless marriage

When James and I started dating we were shameless. I was 24 and he was 26-years-old. He joined me and my best friend on a road trip and although three of us shared a tent for two weeks, James and I still had sex every night, accompanied by the disgruntled sighs of my BFF and her pleading, “Oh for fuck sake, James, would you come already so we can all get to sleep.”

Of course, having a noisy peanut gallery did not speed things up.

How James and I went from having a normal, healthy sex life in the early part of our relationship to a sexless marriage was 100% on me. He did nothing wrong. I was the one who drew away after we learned that our efforts to conceive a child would never result in us being a family. We started trying after having been together for two years. After I’d miscarried twice, I saw a specialist.

The specialist performed two surgeries on me: one to remove a grapefruit-sized ovarian cyst, the other to scrape polyps from my uterus. The combination of a damaged ovary and a wickedly scarred uterus, he said, meant I might continue to conceive but…
