The 5 Types of Human Desire

When it comes to why we’re attracted to each other

Why do we desire each other? Why are we hugely attracted to some people and not at all to others? Why do these desires seem to change over time? And why are we sometimes attracted to people without understanding why we feel such desire?

Over the course of my life I’ve come to see desire has many, many causes and a lot of these come from the core of what it means to be human.

Desire isn’t a choice.

It can be broken down into 5 elements and they all influence our tastes, preferences and behaviours simultaneously.

1. Evolutionary/Unconscious Desire

This is desire which exists at the most basic, animalistic level of our psyches. Humans possess the two basic drives that all animals and living things possess; to survive and to reproduce.

Unconscious desire has come up through millions of years of evolution for nature’s purpose of procreation; for bonding two interlocking members of the same species so they can copulate and pass their genes on to the next generation.

In humans evolutionary desire has also come up through our hunter-gatherer evolution, where we lived in moving tribes for over 200,000 years…
