Why It Gets More Difficult to Find Someone the Older You Get

As we look for what we want in other people, they also look for what they want in us

I’m a man in my 30s and currently single, which means I’m a millennial who gets to have all the fun of navigating modern dating life — with its dating apps, singles events and family not-so subtly asking when I’m finally going to settle down.

Notice how I didn’t add ‘my friends keep asking me when I’m going to settle down’.

This is something I’ve found fascinating over the years. In their baby-boomer generation our parents settled down at a much younger average age than millennials do now (in the 1980’s the average marriage age for women was 23 and 25 for men), but in modern times millenials are doing things much later than their folks did at the same age (only 30% of millennials live with a spouse and child like their parents did at their age).

Curious, I think to myself, even though I’m in the same position. But I look around me, and even given the facts I’ve just mentioned, I’m still surprised to see a significant portion of people around my age are also single, or not close to settling down.

What gives?
