Frozen Fruit Purée

I rediscovered this dessert at a cafe in Lamu Old Town (on Kenya’s east coast) when I got a strong sense of déjà vu while eating something very much like a soft mango ice cream. I used to make the exact same things years earlier in my first vegan phase in grad school.

I looked over the counter of the cafe and sure enough, there was a Champion juicer, which is a true mechanical beast of heavy hardware. This device can purée frozen fruits (or vegetables I suppose, but who wants broccoli in a cold and soft format?).

If you have a juicer that can purée frozen fruits, then keep some ziplocked in your freezer for your cheat meals, either whole (like with strawberries) or chopped up (as with mangos). Your guide to frozen fruit chunk size should simply be the size of your juicer opening.

Just push the frozen fruit directly into the juicer with the right setting for this kind of work, and the purée will be the closest you can get to fruit flavored ice cream or sorbet or gelato or sherbet or frozen custard or granita or frozen yogurt or soft serve or melting popsicles with zero sugar or fat added.
