Smoothed Spiced Coffee

up your morning coffee game

--

1 pot of filter brewed coffee
1 tsp of cocoa and cinnamon blend (see the Spices section in Pantry Stocking above)
Soy or almond milk (if desired)
Stevia or monk fruit (optional, sweeten to taste)

Special equipment needed: an Aeropress.

This is perhaps less a recipe than a hack :) What makes this coffee ‘smoothed’ is that I run filter brewed coffee through an Aeropress. The microfiber filter in the Aeropress reduces the acidity of the coffee (this is one of the unique features of the Aeropress method).

Also, as you work your way down towards the bottom of a pot of brewed coffee, the amount of fine coffee grains increases, making for a rougher texture. The Aeropress will filter out these fine grains of coffee that got past your coffee filter in the first pass. Since grounds settle towards the bottom of a pot of brewed coffee, more grains will be blocked by the Aeropress filter as you progressively get towards the bottom of the pot.

The ‘spiced’ component to the recipe is to add a teaspoon of cocoa and cinnamon blend, not so much to adulterate the pure coffee connoisseur experience, but to obtain the health benefits of those two spices. Add an unsweetened vegan milk, such as soy or almond, if you like milky coffee. On your cheat days, consider ‘going wild’ with more sugary oat milk instead.

The coffee grounds of the filtered coffee blocked by the AeroPress filter.
