In this article, we will take a look at how we can get the latest news from major media outlets using their RSS feeds and combine them with a user friendly UI. To do that, we will use KNIME Analytics Platform.

You can download for free the workflow “KNIME Global Breaking News” from the KNIME Community Hub.

First of all, we connect to each media outlet’s RSS Feeds using the RSS Feed Reader node.

Next, we concatenate all the results in a single table, filter out news whose title and description are over 4k characters, and pass them to the “Breaking News Dashboard” component.

Inside the component, we first show the results as a table with clickable hyperlinks to each news detail. We also provide media outlet as a slicer for the user.

Each news is readable within KNIME Analytics Platform.

In the lower part of the dashboard, we create a word cloud that contains the 300 most frequent words from the news. To do that, we clean the data (i.e., stop words filter, punctuation erasure, etc.) and create bags of words from the news. Finally, we calculate term frequencies and display them in the word cloud.
