July 2021 was a lucky month for me because in that month I got a chance to be a part of The Lion Parcel Team Design. Yes.., I’ve got an opportunity as a Product Designer at Lion Parcel, one of the Logistic Companies in Indonesia. And this is my story while working at Lion Parcel.

Who do I collaborate with?

Here’s an exciting experience for me, given the opportunity to work with the team that builds the Lion Parcel customer application (By the way, have you installed our application? Go install here). I joined the Discovery Squad team; this team focuses on users from the first time they install the application until they can access our core features. And of course, this thing allows me to work and discuss with the amazing people behind every product at Lion Parcel.

We as designers are divided; some are dedicated to each squad team including myself, and some are dedicated to the Design System. If you don’t know, we have a design system, it’s called Pakket! It’s very cool, this Design System is very helpful and accelerates us as designers and developers to work. Cool man!

Every day I will focus on working on projects in my squad team. In our team, there are Product Manager, Product Owner, Designer, Researcher, Writer, Developers, and also Testers. Of course, there are many more parties involved in each of our product development. We all collaborate to deliver the best products that users can use comfortably.

What do I do as a Product Designer?

For the first time when we want to start working on a project, the Product Owner will bring a list of initiatives that will be carried out by the team. We will brainstorm together between the Product Manager, Product Owner, Product Designer, UX Researcher, and UX Writer (the product team in the squad), to explore each other’s ideas from various points of view on the problem that we will solve.

For further coordination with UX Researcher, whether the list of initiatives needs to be researched first or whether there are previous research results that can be used. We can also participate directly to listen directly when the researcher conducts a session with the user, so we can see and hear firsthand how the user experiences using our product.

From the various insights that have been obtained, I can start and do the project, start making designs that can solve the problem, collaborate with Product Owner (PO) to discuss and take the decision, choose the best UI for the user, discuss with UX Writer for suitable wording, and sync up with other Designers to get more insight. The last with my PO, present the design to the developer team.

We will also discuss this with the developer team to get input for the designs that have been made. Because sometimes there are limitations that make the design cannot be implemented, or there are other technological solutions that we can use for better results in the design solution that will be implemented.

When all designs are final and mutually agreed upon, they are ready for delivery to developers for development. All flows and assets needed are ensured that they have been delivered to the developer properly so that what will be developed is following what we designed. Next, I will stand by as long as the work is done by the developer until our project can be released. And during this time, the product team and I will start brainstorming again for the next initiative that we will be working on. This process will repeat itself when there are new initiatives or new projects that we will work on. Because of course, a product will never be perfect, there will always be updates for our product to be even better.

Is it Fun?

I have learned a lot of things during my 8 months at Lion Parcel, and it was a very pleasant experience. Moreover, being able to collaborate with many people from various backgrounds, and being able to discuss from various perspectives makes the work process more exciting. So, what do you think? Is it fun to work as a Product Designer? Especially at Lion Parcel!
