Make your Tableau dashboard interactive
As a beginner of Tableau, most of the functions we used to play with are Rows, Column, Filter, and Marks. Because these functions are easy to understand and we can obviously find them when we open the Tableau.
This story is going to introduce one handy function which is also accessible but you might never play with it!
Parameter
Right-Click blank space on the left-field to find Create Parameter.
Put the integer in order as the Value so we don’t mess up when we create the calculation and use Dimensions’ name as Display As for user to select.
Create another parameter for the measure, and use the calculation that we are interested in as Display As(This is for users to read, not the real calculation).
Righ-Click the parameter to Show both Parameters Control, and you will see the Drop-down list on the right.
Calculation
Righ-Click the parameter and then Calculated Field to create Calculation
Write the calculation base on the parameter you assign in the Parameter(Select a Dimension). (1 is the value we assigned in the parameter and [Name]/[Name(Region)] is to point to the dimensions)
Drag Dimension calculation to the Rows and Measure calculation in the Text
Then here is our interactive Dashboard!
