Overview: The Kitchener-Waterloo Humane society has been serving the community of Kitchener-Waterloo since 1927 (Kitchener Waterloo Humane Society). They have saved countless animals and rehomed many as well. However, dealing with the public over certain bylaws has always been an issue. This is why they wanted to take to social media to bring awareness on many common bylaws that citizens of Kitchener-Waterloo are commonly unaware of. We decided to sketch up a dog and his owner to tell the public about the overlooked bylaws.

Context and Challenge: The problem that the humane society is facing is often times people are unaware of the bylaws that pertain to Kitchener-Waterloo. With hopes to keep cost low and engagement/awareness high some goals of project were to have a positive response to the created characters and get more people aware of what is against the law in Kitchener/Waterloo.

Process and Insight: When sitting down to actually figure out how to engage people the first thought wasn’t to have characters made. It made it easier to get the message across of what I wanted to show and I felt that I couldn’t get the same message across from taking stock photos. So it started with YouTube on how to create characters watched a few of them then went to animals and eventually got what I wanted the next part was just plugging them into situations I felt I could properly get the bylaw addressed.

The Solution: The solution was the two characters I got the dog and the owner. When I found situations in which I could plug them into it all made sense and I think the law speaks for itself through the pictures.

The Results: The results were received well engagement amongst the social media mediums used went up a lot, the characters were perceived positively from the public and the Humane society believes that it has raised awareness on some of the bylaws that are commonly not known amongst the public.
