Is Now The Best Time To Stop Writing On Medium?
Understand the complete history of the platform before you decide whether or not to abandon ship.
Are you thinking of leaving? It happens once every few years without fail. Earnings drop. The sky begins to fall, and your favourite author meanders off to new pastures. There’s a cycle to it. Trust me, I’ve lived through enough of these to know.
These extinction events tend to kill off the big beasts firsts, followed by the the smaller creatures exerting the most energy at the coalface, tapping at the seams for interesting adverbs. If you’re churning out three to four stories a day and you’ve been here more than two years, you might be at the point of burn out.
But if you know your palaeontology, and I’m sure you do, you’ll know that birds are the last living relatives of the dinosaurs. We are what’s left of an entire echelon of fascinating feathered lizard-creatures — we’re built to survive.

I’ve been here since 2018 and writing (fairly constantly) meaning I count anyone who arrived after 2021 to be a mere Medium child. If you’re part of the new intake when Medium opened its borders then you’re little more than a Medium foetus.
