Just Because A Website Said It’s Rape Doesn’t Make It So

Some thoughts on accountability in conversations about rape and its consequences.

I woke up this morning and got embroiled in a row about what constitutes rape with a prominent writer on the platform. What’s more, I did this before I got out of bed. Totally on brand for me and not bad for a random Wednesday morning.

I’m aware that rape is a massively contentious issue with lots of strong opinions, so I’m going to do what I always do and wade right in.

Hold my breakfast.

The main point of contention between us was the following passage regarding a fictional couple and the legal conclusion she drew about what transpired between them.

So to be absolutely clear from the outset, I’m not condoning this sort of behaviour. If you’re in this sort of relationship where sex has become a slanging match, neither of you is in a good place in your life and you should go and get therapeutic intervention.

That’s true for both of you.
