Are you one of the 89 percent of the population who pick up their phone as soon as you wake up? That was me until 2 years ago. Even worse, any time a notification went off, I was like my dog when you mention the words ‘treat’ or ‘go for a walk.’

It wasn’t until I read Cal Newport's book “Deep Work” that I understood just what my digital habits were costing me. Later, he would publish “Digital Minimalism” to drive the point even deeper. I had no idea how much of my time was given up for micro-doses of dopamine joy.

It is not that we have a short space of time, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough, and it has been given in sufficiently generous measure to allow the accomplishment of the very greatest things if the whole of it is well invested.

Ad agencies invest billions to get and keep your attention to sell you products. To them, your attention is worth a great deal. But what are you getting in return?

Every day we are inundated with information begging for our attention. From our SmartPhones and laptops and tablets, TV and billboards, anywhere your eyeballs may venture. Anywhere you might pause long enough to absorb information…
