Let’s Get to Know Tokyo Game Show

For those who are not familiar with The Tokyo Game Show (TGS), TGS is an annual video game expo in Tokyo, Japan, featuring a diverse array of video game-related activities. It includes showcases of upcoming video games, major announcements from gaming companies and developers, esports tournaments, an indie game corner, cosplay displays, merchandise, and collectibles for sale, developer panels and workshops, business and networking opportunities, virtual reality and augmented reality exhibits, and themed areas dedicated to specific gaming genres. TGS is a major event in the gaming industry, offering a comprehensive look at the latest developments and trends in the world of video games. The TGS started in 1996. It has since become an annual event that showcases the latest developments in the video game industry, making it one of the most significant gaming expos in the world.

In 2023, with the global rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have ushered in a new era for the gaming industry, making games a primary source of entertainment and social connection. As people seek diverse ways to enjoy games, the landscape has evolved to encompass e-sports, game commentaries, and an ever-expanding array of related products like gaming PCs and specialized furniture. Furthermore, technologies that were initially developed for gaming purposes, such as the Metaverse and NFTs, are now permeating various industries, amplifying the impact of games on society. With this industry expansion comes an influx of new talent, driving the gaming sector’s growth.

To adapt to this ever-changing landscape, TGS 2023, under the theme “Games in Motion, the World in Revolution,” provided a platform to explore the dynamic evolution of the gaming industry in bringing the world of gaming to a wider audience and showcasing its transformative power in today’s interconnected world.

From the report, this year, official programs attracted 22,399,426 views in total and the number of visitors to TGSVR2023 was 319,967.

LUCKMON VISITING TGS 2023

Every year Luckmon visits big game expos and conferences to bring new audiences to engage with Luckmon and for our future updates following up on our progress also in our efforts to bring business partners. This year, David and Kevin visited TGS 2023 for a business trip. We are excited to share some of the insights and stories behind TGS this year.

1. How was TGS 2023 compared to your previous experiences?

😎David : This marks my third visit to the Tokyo Game Show, and I must say that this year’s event stood out prominently. Unlike the past two years when the show was adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to its cancellation in both 2020 and 2021, this year’s Tokyo Game Show displayed a resurgence in activity. In contrast to the reduced attendance and fewer game announcements of the previous year, the 2023 edition saw a remarkable resurgence in both attendee numbers and the unveiling of exciting new games. Personally, I think renowned Japanese companies like Sega, Namco Bandai, and Square Enix showcased a fantastic lineup, and the presence of many other Japanese companies added to the show’s vibrancy. Furthermore, it was heartening to observe the increasing participation of Korean and Chinese gaming companies, making the Tokyo Game Show a truly global and dynamic event this time around.”

2. What was the most interesting program/thing/or booth that you experienced this year?

🍀Kevin : “It seems that since the game show is held in Japan, the most enjoyable part was witnessing games featuring powerful intellectual properties (IPs). The real-size replica of FF7 Cloud’s motorcycle was impressive, and the level of detail in various game developers’ exhibits has improved.”

😎David : “One of the highlights for me was the remarkable presence of ‘Yakuza: Like a Dragon,’ a new game introduced by the renowned gaming company, Sega. The buzz around this particular booth was palpable, with throngs of enthusiastic fans eagerly awaiting their turn to dive into the immersive world of Yakuza:Like a Dragon. Notably, the booth was brimming with fans who were not only eager to experience the game but were also eagerly anticipating the opportunity to snag exclusive Yakuza-themed merchandise and collectibles. Also, caught my attention was Square Enix’s exhibition space, as well as the captivating booth presented by Capcom, where eager gamers formed extensive lines to get a taste of the much-anticipated ‘Dragon’s Dogma II.’ It was a testament to the immense excitement and anticipation that surrounded these titles. Additionally, the presence of titles like ‘Street Fighter 6’ and ‘Exoprimal’ added another layer of excitement to the event.”

3.What is a big difference from G-star or other international game shows?

Kevin shared his experience focusing on the geographical location that conference was held that influenced one of the key purposes for networking from B2B perspectives. And David shared his experience focusing on the program itself.

🍀Kevin : “One notable difference from G-Star is that the Tokyo Game Show is held in Chiba, which lacks as many entertainment and dining options in the surrounding area. On the other hand, G-Star is held in Busan, South Korea, with Haeundae Beach nearby, offering plenty of entertainment and enjoyable activities. It seems like the Korean G-Star might be more favorable for parties and networking.”

😎David : “When comparing the Tokyo Game Show to other international game shows, one significant distinction lies in its primary focus. The Tokyo Game Show leans heavily towards the Business-to-Consumer (B2C) side of the spectrum, making it a prime platform and focus more on Console and PC games for reaching Japanese gamers. In contrast, events like G-Star strike a balance between Business-to-Business (B2B) and B2C elements, offering opportunities for both networking and showcasing products directly to consumers. G-Star is notable for its well-organized approach to accommodating both B2B and B2C interests and if the gaming companies are focused on mobile then its must go event. GamesCom, on the other hand, stands out as an international game show that is widely considered a must-attend event within the gaming industry. Its comprehensive nature caters to a broad spectrum of professionals, from developers and publishers to gamers. GamesCom provides a platform for extensive B2B and B2C interactions, making it a versatile and valuable destination for those in the gaming industry.”

Overall, Tokyo Game Show 2023 had provided a tremendous opportunity and great experience for gamers and excited for the new era of gaming industry with diverse technology. We are also excited to see how next year will be like for Luckmon.
