Lucky Dip Vol 5 — Part 1

Dab (with wizardry)! Not taken at Lucky Dip but at the SU’s weekly epic club night Pop Tarts. Is that a severed arm in your pocket (second girl, front row?)

In this our fifth edition, we flung open the doors to Lucky Dip once more to welcome the good people of Sheffield Students’ Union with delights in digital and tech on show. As always we share the highlights here for all.

We got hands on with test driving — not a Tesla but real self driving cars with Anki Overdrive. Unlocked the secret powers of Form Cards. Opened the lid and give a first look at the best major release to date of UnionCloud. The platform that powers over 50 student union websites and related digital services including Sheffield. To round it all off, we share our Lucky Christmas Tech List for 2016.

Rather than one long post, we’ve split it into two. Part 1 is below and Part 2, our second post runs you through all the features and functionality being improved and added to our website platform UnionCloud.

Wellbeing — Anki Drive Super League Championship

In action! Anki Overdrive and fellow SU staff having their first spin on the track

We’ll be launching the official league soon! The even better news is the Anki Overdrive will be available for you to practice your skills, each and every Wednesday lunch time (12–1pm). Come to the Tech Dev office and fine tune your AI racing skills.

The fabulous Wonderland podcast by Steven Johnson reveals why this and other games improve cognitive function and plasticity of your brain. Wellbeing and then some!

Lucky — Christmas Tech List 2016

12 (yes we’ve used that old crimbo chestnut) highlights from across the tech spectrum for you to stuff a stocking or two. From the inexpensive Form Card through to extravagant (for some) pet treat dispensing app controlled bots.

Here’s a bonus not included in the 12 but perhaps the quirkiest of the list, plus you’ll need to chase the vending machines around the globe. Snapchats Spectacles and here’s a link to how to chase them down (if you get some let us know how you get on…)

Just for you then, this festive season go fill your or your loved ones stockings…
