While the average decline of print circulation revenues over the past five years has only been 6%, advertising has slumped almost a fifth (19%). The marginal 2018 year-on-year declines in print (minus 1%) and advertising (minus 2%) are forecast to continue at the same rates into 2019.

Those who have been the hardest hit are the higher-income countries with robust digital infrastructure. In South Africa, print circulation revenues are down 28% over the past five years, while Israel’s have dropped by 18%. By contrast, during that period print circulation revenues grew by 8% in Kenya and 3% in Nigeria.

Print advertising revenues plunged more than a third in Israel (down 36%) over the past five years, but only declined 3% in Turkey and .9% in Kenya.

The media industry is ripe for disruption and it’s with this in mind, we organized the “Gamification for Media” workshop in collaboration with Aga Khan Media Innovation Centre during our monthly Africa Game Developers meetup to explore, engage and challenge the gaming and media communities respectively on how they can collaborate to innovate within this space.

Njoki Chege, Director - AKU Media Innovation Centre

Ms. Njoki Chege took to the floor and shared insights on the global media industry as well as the local industry and the shifts & trends that are taking place. She shared contexts into how technology can be used to see more media uptake and appetite among the younger generation.

In the room were a diverse audience including but not limited to visual design, game developers, game designers, educational and media practitioners who were able to share there various thoughts on the industry and how ideas could benefit each one of them.
