In 2007, Apple created a revolutionary way for consumers to interact with companies and their products: the mobile app. Just over ten years later, blockchain is taking Steve Jobs’ creation a step further, with the decentralized app, or DApp.

Some critics have yawned at the thought of DApps, but contrary to their beliefs, we think DApps will be a crucial asset, specifically designed to enable virtual assets ownership to be on the blockchain. We only have to look at the following DApp rankings to give us insight into why we should pay attention to blockchain gaming DApps.

Latest DApp ranking lists showing Daily Active Users and Trade Value

It’s not just popular because there is demand, but also because of the potential, it brings to gamers.

The unfortunate situation currently is that game makers own all the assets that players attain or create. And once the game’s difficulty has been exhausted or the player finds the gameplay stale, gamers who move on to a new game must start over.

In blockchain gaming, players who invest their time and effort into gaming and beating other players are truly rewarded and not just in the game that they play. Blockchain allows gamers to own their own assets, such as gear, weapons, gold, and mana, that are considered assets in the virtual online world.

Once assets are tied to an owner, whether in the form of game assets or digital tokens, this will be indisputable. When gamers opt out of difficult levels or want to try different games, they can reroll by selling all their gaming assets and entering a different gaming universe. With existing conversion of gaming assets to tokens, the latter can be used upstart and build characters with powerful assets in an instant.

To help gamers traverse the different universes, the Ludos Protocol platform uses smart contracts to carry out the unique identification of various virtual assets in the game, such as game props, skins, and pets. It is this asset accumulation and the ultimate ability to cash out and gain a headstart in other universes that makes blockchain gaming appealing, whether gamers are hardcore or casual.

Each digital asset has a unique contractual agreement, a reference to the owner and the content description file. This is processed through the smart contract to confirm and maintain the ledger in the virtual world.

To enable gamers to gain the headstart they want — especially casual and new gamers — Ludos Protocol will be also creating an exchange. This investment will enable new gamers to gain a competitive edge over other gamers, by investing in LUD or universe-specific tokens. An open marketplace was in vogue for a while by many game makers but was halted as this diminished revenue sources of the creators. Ludos Protocol wants to upend that dominance and distribute power more evenly amongst the industry’s stakeholders.

The exchange will feature tight security to ensure that assets and ownership are safely protected.

Will DApps wow developers and consumers like apps did upon their first introduction? Only time will tell. Given that it took a number of years before consumer apps became a hit, there is almost certain to be a delay. But we’re not waiting for it to become mainstream before we join the trend.

We’re bringing it to the mainstream.

About Ludos Protocol
Ludos Protocol is a purpose-built blockchain infrastructure project for the gaming community. As only the third blockchain project to be backed by Japanese investment giant Softbank, Ludos addresses numerous shortcomings in the existing gaming landscape. Its main chain + multi-sidechain architecture allows games to run entirely on their own blockchain, preventing scalability issues that have plagued previous blockchain-based games. Additionally, the Protocol seeks to create a gamer-friendly ecosystem whereby game developers and gamers can come together to easily crowdfund and build on the platform. The use of non-fungible tokens (NFT’s) within the ecosystem will allow gamers to swap assets in one game for assets in another. Finally, through their partnership with FullPay Japan, Ludos will give gamers the chance to use LUD tokens that are earned in-game to shop and buy at a range of retail stores in Japan and later the world.
