Why we create.

I often get “jumbled up”. I am not sure what to call it other than that. My head feels clogged. There might be too much going on at work, or weird stuff with a relationship. Some wall that has been built up between someone or something.

It’s like there is something inside of me that needs to get out.

Because I think there is.

Sometimes when I get like this I ask myself a few questions.

Why do I need to do this? I don’t know.

Is it to please God? That is not why I feel like I need to do this, but it might.

Is it to please others? No.

Is it for public affirmation? Maybe.

Do you feel more free after? Yes.

Then that is what matters. I am not always even sure what “it” is for you. It is not always the same thing for me. Most of the time for me it is some sort of writing or performing.

It is ultimately an expression of something intangible. The act of creating something out of nothing or making something new out of something old.

I believe we were made in the image of God. Genesis doesn’t say why God created the Earth does it? It just says, “In the beginning, God created…” He had something to express. Something to share.

We have that same urge inside of us because we were made in his image. When we do this, when we express this, we are acting as God created us to act. That is a beautiful thing. It causes us to connect with not only our creator but with those around us. It causes others to want to engage in that beautiful communion.

We create because we have to. We have to express somehow this thing that is inside us. When we do, we stop feeling “jumbled up”, because, ultimately, creating is an act of worship that connects us to our creator.

So, today, go create something.
