Friendship is an elastic band.

Dear Self,

Yesterday I spoke with one of my best friends.

He now lives in New York.

Apparently he has lived in America for two years!

Which means we haven’t seen each other for two years.

Truth be told we have hardly spoken in that time. We have touched base occasionally, but hardly at all.

But our friendship persists.

We stretch further and further away from each other but then when we talk the connection snaps back into focus and it is like we have never been apart.

I suppose there is a limit to this stretching. At some point it just goes too far and two people no longer really know each other. Too much happens, there are too many changes, but not so far for us.

I have a handful of friends like this. Long distance but very close to my heart.

I really love them, but they are too far away to be the only friends I have.

I think I realised this and that’s why I have spent the last few years investing in friendships with people who live where I live.

Happy to have the global network…I just need a hug and a cup of tea as well.

Love

Luke
