I am impossible to explain.
Dear Self,
I am often floored by the moment when someone asks me “What do you do? “ or a friend goes to introduce me…
“Luke’s a…how would you explain what you do?”
I have a very neat explanation that I can quickly give…
“I help people find and use their authentic voice, I do the same for organisations who are doing good things and I make art that reflects the world back to us in order to make it a better place.”
I’m happy that that covers things off.
However I am acutely aware of the short comings compared to…
“I’m an environmental engineer.”
Or…
“I’m a writer.”
My statement doesn’t fit me into any neat category and is not something any one else could say, because they are unlikely to remember it!
I could say…
“I’m a teacher.”
Or
“I’m a consultant.”
Or
“I’m an artist.”
All of these are partly true. Each on their own is quite deceptive because of the ‘noise’ we carry around these three roles. I suppose this is just the challenge we face when it comes to fitting each other into boxes. Maybe I am no different to anyone else? Perhaps everyone feels this rebellion towards being boxed in?
Last night I came up with a short hand that might be useful…
“I’m a horse whisperer for people, organisations and audiences.”
I’ll float that out there for a while and see how it goes.
Self, any feedback or advice on this one is very welcome.
Luke
