Standing in the bath.

Dear Self,

Every time I stand up in the bath I hear a bell ring.

Every time it happens I am pleasantly surprised, it is such a sweet sound, a perfectly pitched resonant bell. For a fraction of a moment I wonder if this is something divine, some kind of sign about my greatness…

Then I remember that we have a bell hanging over our bath that is perfectly placed for my head to hit it when I stand up.

The bell was a gift from one of my Alexander Technique students gave it to me. It is a special bell that he bought when he was in Japan. I’ve had it for many years now. In our new house it lives above the bath.

In our old house it lived outside the bungalow. I spent many hours in the bungalow exploring movement and the Alexander Technique. When the bell arrived it would ring randomly depending on the wind. Every time it rang I used it as a reminder to coordinate my head with the rest of my body as I moved (that’s the Alexander Technique in a nut shell).

So now, when it rings, I recall those many hours spent in the bungalow understanding movement.

It is just lovely.
