HOW TO SUPPORT THE MENTAL WELL-BEING OF EMPLOYEES DURING COVID-19

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, our health has become our top priority. For some, it was already before, for others, it has served as a turning point to take a little more care of it. In addition to general health, during confinement, we have had to test another type of health, one that tends to be forgotten more than it should be: mental health.

Well-being at the workplace during COVID-19.

Getting through quarantine, home office, job and economic instability, uncertainty about what will come and adapting to the new normality is not easy. The negative impact this has had on our mental health is a reality for everyone.

One of the most important changes we have experienced has been the one that has impacted our work. Either because we have had to stop working or because you have had to do it from home. If you are getting used to the new routine of working from home or you have to return to your job in completely different conditions than before, here are some guidelines to take care of your mental well-being. Employees and employers, workers and bosses, take note.

EMPATHY

Take into account the personal situation of each worker (family, studies, other responsibilities) and be more flexible than ever.

COMMUNICATION

Communicate frequently with your employees to let them know what measures are being taken at the company to ensure a safe and controlled return to work.

WORKERS’ RIGHTS

It clarifies the rights that workers have that can serve as support as flexibilisation measures that allow for better reconciliation.

FLEXIBILISATION MEASURES

Remember the possibilities available to employees such as sick leave or other government assistance. It facilitates the option of combining teleworking whenever possible.

SUPPORT

Be open and transparent in your interactions with employees. Provide support (and not a source of additional stress) and let them know that you are there to help in any way you can and that it is okay not being okay.

TRANSPARENCY

It promotes spaces where peers can talk to each other to give tips and tricks on how to cope better.

ACCESS TO RESOURCES

Make sure all team members have access to available support resources. You may want to identify a person to serve as a point of contact for any of these issues.

NEW WORK ROUTINES

It encourages employees to create a new routine, adapted to the circumstances, that allows them to feel comfortable in the workspace, such as taking regular rest breaks.

RECONNECTING WITH THE TEAM

Take the opportunity to have social contact again with the rest of the team to reconnect with them, of course, in an environment that respects hygiene and safety rules.

REGULAR 1–1 CHECKS

Schedule individual meetings with team members or the team leader to check that the return to work is being done correctly and that the adaptation measures put in place are to everyone’s liking.

MAXIMUM SAFETY IN THE WORKSPACE

Let them know what safety measures they should follow, such as social distance, frequent hand washing or the maximum number of people allowed in the same room.
