Hello, Surfies!

On July 19th at 8:00 AM (KST), LumiWave participated in Sui’s X Space! The discussion centered around gaming on Sui with LumiWave, Pebble City, and Xociety. We had a fantastic time sharing updates and insights! While we know many of you joined us, we’ve compiled a recap for anyone who couldn’t make it. Let’s dive into the latest updates about LumiWave!

Highlights of LumiWave Gaming on Sui

Here are the key highlights from the discussion for LumiWave:

  • Web3 Launch of Samurai Shodown R

LumiWave is launching a Web3 version of the iconic game Samurai Shodown R in collaboration with SNK, transforming the beloved game into a Web3 format. This version builds on the game’s rich history and massive fanbase.

  • Dynamic NFT Technology

A key feature being utilized in Samurai Shodown R is Dynamic NFT, applied to animal mounts in the game. This allows mounts to boost character stats and evolve in size and appearance as they level up, all while avoiding frequent contract updates.

  • Blockchain Enhancements

The blockchain technology, especially the “Closed Loop”, enhances community interaction through “CLAN NFT” and Closed Loop Tokens. This feature helps manage resources efficiently, prevents misuse, and encourages member loyalty, benefiting both gameplay and marketing.

  • Asset Ownership Benefits

Web3 enables asset ownership with the right to transfer or swap assets across games. Unlike traditional Web2 games, players can move and utilize their tokens across different games, maintaining the value of their assets and enhancing their gaming experience.

  • Suitability of MMORPGs for Sui

The MMORPG genre is highlighted as ideal for Sui due to its need for real-time transactions and minimal latency. Sui’s performance in handling these demands makes it a perfect fit for such games.

  • Focus on Core Gameplay

LumiWave emphasizes the importance of focusing on core gameplay features and providing genuine enjoyment, rather than just integrating Web3 elements. They stress that sustainability in Web3 gaming should center on delivering a rewarding experience for players.

These highlights showcase LumiWave’s commitment to integrating Web3 technology in a way that enhances gameplay and player experience while maintaining a strong focus on the core values of the game. If you’re interested in learning more, read the script below.

Let’s talk about LumiWave!

What is LumiWave working on now?

LumiWave:

We are about to launch a Web3 version of the iconic game IP Samurai Shodown. In collaboration with the legendary game producer SNK, we are thrilled and honored to transform this beloved game, which has been cherished for 30 years, into the Web3 format.

To briefly introduce Samurai Shodown R for those who are not familiar with the game: it was the world’s first weapons-based fighting game to be played on an arcade console back in 1993. It has since evolved into PC and mobile versions, amassing a massive fan base worldwide. The previous version of the game in Web2 accumulated more than 72 million downloads and generated over $100 million in revenue.

We feel a bit of positive pressure while developing this IP, knowing it has a massive fanbase eagerly anticipating its release with new technology. Our goal is to satisfy a diverse community of fans, ranging from teenagers to those in their fifties and sixties, who nostalgically remember playing this game on arcade consoles.

Our focus right now is on providing these loyal fans with a seamless gaming experience, free from any technical barriers that might arise from Web3 integrations.

Can you comment on which Sui technologies are really the most important for Samurai Shodown R?

LumiWave:

One of the key Sui technologies we’re using in Samurai Shodown R is called Dynamic NFT. This technology is a fantastic feature mainly applied to our animal mounts that characters can ride on. These Mount NFTs boost the speed and stats of the user’s characters and can be upgraded from level 1 to 65. Similar to how Pikachu transforms into Raichu, the mount’s size and appearance will evolve as they level up.

Therefore, the Dynamic NFT feature is very useful, allowing us to change the mount’s attributes without altering the entire contract. This makes the process much easier for us, avoiding the frequent contract updates that would otherwise cost a lot of resources from our end.

What does Web 3, in particular the blockchain, bring to Samurai Shodown R?

LumiWave:

In Samurai Shodown, which is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), the community feature is crucial. The best example of this is the “CLAN NFT.” The Clan Master should buy this NFT to gather members for hunting and raids against powerful monsters. This makes the game more fulfilling and rewarding compared to solo play.

Additionally, we use the “Closed Loop” feature from Sui to enhance community interaction. The Closed Loop Token has two benefits for our game:

Firstly, clan leaders can efficiently manage and distribute resources within their community. For instance, tokens earned by the clan can only be distributed among the clan members, preventing the misuse of shared funds. Let’s say I am the clan master and I want to maliciously transfer the tokens to my personal wallet for my own usage. However, thanks to the Closed Loop feature, this will be impossible.

Secondly, this feature encourages member loyalty. As players work together to grow the clan’s resources, their engagement with their shared cause also increases. This positively impacts member retention and facilitates the intake of new members, which is an amazing feature for marketing purposes as well.

In what ways does Samurai Shodown R leverage asset ownership?

LumiWave:

I believe that asset ownership comes with the right to transfer or swap assets without being restricted by the game’s jurisdiction. Typically, in Web2 games, it is nearly impossible for players to move their assets outside the game they play. If a user wants to play a new game, they need to start over from scratch without transferring their accumulated resources from the old game, which I believe is unfair.

The main reason for this is that each game IP is owned by different IP holders. Moving assets from Game A to Game B can potentially cause settlement issues between Game Studio A and Game Studio B. However, thanks to blockchain technology, different game studios can process instant settlements in real-time using tokens.

Under this token framework, users are now empowered to freely transfer or swap their tokens. For example, if I want to move tokens from Samurai Shodown R to explore a new game, such as a Xociety game or Pebble City, I can transfer the tokens on Sui and then swap them for Pebble City tokens or Xociety tokens. This flexibility allows players to utilize their assets to enjoy and explore more games while maintaining the value of their assets.

Since LumiWave, as a game developer, has a platform for games, what is your pitch for the most suitable game genre for Sui?

LumiWave:

I believe the MMORPG genre is a perfect fit for Sui. A massively multiplayer environment simply cannot be facilitated without the ability to process real-time transactions.

When game developers implement blockchain in their games, latency and finality are major obstacles. These can significantly impact the user experience and lower the quality of the game. However, when we tried out Sui, it demonstrated outstanding performance for games like Samurai Shodown, which require real-time interactions from massive numbers of players. The end-to-end interaction takes around 480 milliseconds, allowing for live interactions with minimal latency.

So, back to the question, this capability makes Sui an ideal choice for MMORPGs.

Do you want to give any final thoughts thoughts here?

LumiWave:

I can’t agree more on what Xociety and Pebble City mentioned earlier. I’m very glad that we are standing on the same ground concerning the sustainability of the Web 3 gaming industry. So I will just elaborate on what Xociety said previously. When I interviewed some Web 3 game studios, I noticed that they overly focus on “Web3 integration” at the expense of the core features and value of the game. The first of which, I believe, is providing enjoyment and fun to our gamers.

We want our players to truly explore their sense of struggle, conflict, and victory as they discover the possibilities within Samurai Shodown R. One of the lessons we’ve learned throughout the past 4 years of development in Web 3 gaming is that by simply bringing the focus back to the core value of gameplay, we can create a rewarding experience for our users that encourages genuine engagement rather than just profit-driven play.

When I go to conferences, many Web 3 game developers are concerned about the chart picker issue. However, I believe that we have formed a phenomenon in Web3 gaming by throwing airdrop events and attracting users by giving out all the NFTs. This was good marketing strategy in the beginning, but if we think about the sustainability of the entire Web 3 gaming industry, we should be concerned about what we can do for the gamers in the long-term. This means, again, focusing back on the core values of the game and its features.
