Who Yann LeCun Is, And Why His Exit Matters

If you work in ML, Yann LeCun has basically been background radiation your whole career.

He’s one of the three “deep learning godfathers” with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio. The trio shared the 2018 Turing Award for the conceptual and engineering work that made deep neural networks practical.

Long before “AI engineer” was a job title, LeCun:

  • Led work on convolutional neural networks (LeNet) at Bell Labs in the late 80s/90s, used for handwriting recognition on checks in production.
  • Helped found the modern deep learning ecosystem (ICLR, energy-based models, early self-supervised learning).
  • Stayed in academia as a professor at NYU, while also building bridges to industry.

In 2013, Mark Zuckerberg hired him to create Facebook AI Research, better known as FAIR. FAIR was explicitly modeled after an academic lab: long-term research, open publications, code releases, and minimal product pressure. Its mission was to understand intelligence itself, not just ship features.

Under LeCun, FAIR:

  • Helped incubate PyTorch, which became the default deep…
