How-To: Migrate Your Polkadot Address into Lunie

Lunie’s staking interface for Polkadot is currently live and we’re so jazzed about getting DOT holders using our platform. However, we realize that until transfers are enabled in the upcoming phase of the Polkadot roadmap, the primary way for DOT holders to use Lunie will be to import their accounts which were generated on other wallets such as Polkadot.js or use the Lunie browser extension or mobile apps to generate a new Polkadot account.

We’ve made the import process as simple and seamless as possible, but wanted to give you an in-depth overview of how it works.

It is important to note that only individuals who have already participated in the Polkadot token sale will have access to DOT tokens for the time being. Any exchanges or websites that advertise selling DOT’s should not be regarded as legitimate unless expressly stated by the official Polkadot channels after transfers are enabled.

DOT Address Generation on Polkadot.js

The official Polkadot webpage has a full tutorial on several ways to claim DOT’s associated with the token sale, however in this guide we’ll focus exclusively on the Polkadot.js method and how to generate the correct credentials to import your Polkadot (and Kusama) address into Lunie.

When visiting the Polkadot.js app, you will be greeted with a block explorer page which provides information about the state of the Polkadot blockchain. To create a Polkadot account and address you should click on the sidebar icon for Accounts.

Once there, you will click the Add Accounts button which will prompt you to give your new account a name and also create and confirm an address to encrypt that account.

There are several key pair crypto types which are supported by Polkadot.js in the account creation flow, with the Schnorrkel (sr25519) keypair type being the recommended type by Polkadot.js. Lunie also supports the ed25519 and edcda keypair types as well.

In this account creation flow, you are given a 12 word mnemonic seed phrase right away, which can be imported into the Lunie browser extension. The Lunie browser extension will work well in either Google Chrome or Brave Browser.

As an advanced feature, a mnemonic seed phrase can be replaced with a Raw Seed by clicking the dropdown button where your 12 word seed phrase is displayed. The 12 word mnemonic seed phrase and raw seed will both generate the same exact address if imported into the Lunie Browser extension.

Once you click the Save button you will be prompted to create your account and a backup .json file will be generated. It is critically important for you to store this .json file in a secure way, as anyone who possesses this file can access your Polkadot account and steal your funds. Please note, that this .json file is not used for importing a Polkadot account into Lunie and is only needed for your own personal records in case of needing a backup for Polkadot.js.

Migrating to Lunie

Now that you have a Polkadot.js address generated and backed up, you can now open up your Lunie browser extension and click the Recover with backup code option. You will be prompted to select the network you wish to restore and should choose Polkadot.

Next you will paste either your 12 word mnemonic seed phrase or raw seed from Polkadot.js and click next, where you will be prompted to add an account name and a password to encrypt your account, which will also be used for signing and confirming transactions.
